Advanced Spanish Mentorship

A personalized program for students who want to connect more deeply with Spanish through authentic conversation, reading, and writing.

Why a mentorship program for advanced students?

Many students who reach advanced levels of Spanish can already hold conversations and understand the language fairly well, but they still need to develop confidence in writing, expand their vocabulary, and learn how to express ideas with more clarity and depth.

After several years of traditional study, what they usually need is not more worksheets or more topics to cover, but opportunities to have authentic conversations and engage with stories, readings, and materials that spark curiosity, reflection, and a genuine interest in reading and writing.

The goal of this mentorship is to help each student develop a more personal and meaningful relationship with Spanish.

Who is this mentorship for?

This program is designed for students between the ages of 12 and 18 who:

  • Already have a solid foundation in Spanish

  • Enjoy reading, having conversations, and expressing ideas

  • Are able to work with independence

  • Are curious and want a deeper, more personalized learning experience

  • Are willing to read and write regularly

  • Want to continue developing their Spanish out of personal interest and choice

Both heritage speakers and students from any background who have had significant exposure to Spanish are welcome.

This program is not designed for beginners or for students who need constant external motivation. It is also usually not the best fit for families looking for a traditional course focused on worksheets, tests, and fast content coverage.

How does it work?

Sessions take place on Zoom in a 1:1 format and are fully personalized. While there is a general academic direction, each student moves at their own pace, and sessions are constantly adapted to their interests, needs, and stage of development. This allows students to learn in a deeper and more meaningful way than in a traditional group class.

Personalized sessions

One of the central parts of the mentorship is the development of a personal blog in Spanish. Students use it to publish reviews, reflections, essays, research projects, narratives, and other types of writing that document their growth throughout the program.

The goal is to help students develop a more natural, consistent, and authentic relationship with writing in Spanish.

Over time, the blog becomes:

  • A real record of linguistic growth

  • A space for personal expression

  • And an academic portfolio

Personal blog development

Throughout the program, students develop conversation skills, reading comprehension, critical thinking, and writing through stories, novels, and carefully selected authentic materials.

Structure and pacing

This mentorship is designed to be flexible and personalized. That means that while there is a general academic path and certain core elements that all students are expected to complete, each student moves at their own pace according to their interests, current proficiency, and level of commitment.

Most students complete the program in approximately 30–40 weeks, although some may finish sooner while others may take more time depending on their needs and goals.

In addition to the weekly live sessions, the program also includes reading, writing, and independent work between sessions.

High School credit

Although this is not an officially accredited program, the academic work completed throughout the mentorship can be documented on a high school transcript as an advanced Spanish or Spanish literacy credit.

Upon successful completion of the program, families receive documentation of the student’s work so they can include it in their transcript records.

This program may be listed on a transcript under titles such as:

  • Spanish 4

  • Advanced Spanish

  • Spanish 4: Conversation and Composition

  • Advanced Spanish Literacy

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes. The mentorship includes reading, writing, and independent work between sessions to help students develop consistent and meaningful contact with Spanish.

The amount and type of work will vary depending on each student’s level, pace, and goals, but most students should expect to spend around 4–5 hours per week working independently outside of sessions.

  • Yes. Students will receive a suggested reading list with short, teen-friendly graded novels and other recommended titles.

Throughout the program, students will need approximately 3–5 required books, although families are welcome to purchase and read as many additional titles as they would like.

In fact, I strongly encourage students to read beyond the required materials whenever possible, since reading is one of the most important foundations of language acquisition and long-term fluency.

  • Yes, but not in a traditional way. Grammar is approached in a contextualized and personalized way through conversations, readings, and the student’s real communication needs.

When necessary, we can slow down and take time to look more closely at specific structures, patterns, or questions.

  • This mentorship is designed mainly for intermediate or advanced students who already have a solid foundation in Spanish and are able to understand and participate in basic or intermediate conversations.

Many students join after completing Spanish 3 or equivalent programs, although the most important thing is a genuine desire to continue growing in the language.

If you are not sure whether this mentorship would be a good fit for your student, we can schedule an initial conversation to talk about their level, interests, and goals.

  • Many of the skills we work on –regular reading, writing, conversation, analysis, and academic vocabulary development– align closely with the kinds of skills often required in advanced programs such as AP or IB.

The main focus of the mentorship, however, is not preparation for a specific exam, but the development of biliteracy, sophisticated expression, and a deeper, longer-lasting relationship with Spanish.

  • That is usually not a problem.

Many students come into the mentorship feeling insecure about speaking or afraid of making mistakes, especially after more traditional or group-based learning experiences. The 1:1 format helps create a more relaxed and safe environment where students can build confidence gradually.

  • That is completely okay. All of the work, practice, and contact with the language remain valuable and continue to be part of the student’s learning process.

However, in order to receive the documentation for academic credit, it is important to complete the essential elements of the program.
